The stock Bosch ignition system used technology that dates back a century - to the Kettering system, which was introduced in the 1910 Cadillac. Even though you can adjust breaker points for near-electronic ignition performance, they will burn and wear within a few thousand miles, long before the recommended replacement interval. With points, the timing will drift; power and fuel economy will suffer.

Bosch Distributors: Virtually all 4-cylinder VW distributors have right-hand points. Some Porsche, Mercedes and Volvo-Penta distributors have left-hand points; some have right-hand points. Please compare the points in your Bosch distributor to the photo of points below:

Determine whether your Bosch distributor has single-piece points, as early (pre-1968 or so) Bosch distributors typically have 2-piece points. If it has 2-piece points, a brass pivot pin will remain, standing up from the breaker plate, after you remove the points.
