The Hot-Spark 009 distributor with electronic ignition
Fits most air-cooled VWs
Brand new centrifugal-advance 009 distributor for Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann-Ghia, Thing, Bus, Type I,
II, III, IV, and air-cooled, 4-cylinder Porsche.
Includes Hot-Spark electronic ignition conversion kit already installed,
ready to run in your air-cooled VW or Porsche - Just install distributor,
connect the red wire to the coil's positive (+ or 15) terminal and the black
wire to the coil's negative terminal (- or 1) and set the timing with a strobe
light - Simple!
Zero-maintenance Hot-Spark electronic ignition means you won't have to fool
with points and timing again - always stays in perfect tune!
Distributor is a quality reproduction of the VW
126-905-205, Bosch 0231 178 009,
centrifugal-advance-only distributor. It does not require a vacuum source for
operation. Uses standard Bosch
distributor cap, rotor, etc.
The Hot-Spark 009/3BOS4U1 distributor fits 12-volt, air-cooled Volkswagens, except later models with factory electronic ignition and
those with certain early Bosch fuel injection systems triggered by the
distributor.
The advance curve of our 009 distributor provides smoother take-off and acceleration than other 009 distributors on the market.
Includes cap, rotor and everything you need - no external ignition box required.
Coil: Stock Bosch coil or HS15HEC high-energy coil OK. Coil should have 1.5 Ohms or more primary resistance. To measure primary resistance: Label and remove all wires from coil. Measure between coil’s + and - terminals with a common digital multimeter, in the 200 Ω mode. Allow a few seconds for the reading to settle downward until it stabilizes. Subtract about 0.3 Ohms from the reading to compensate for multimeter’s inherent resistance.
Test the charging system's maximum voltage: If the charging system voltage, measured at the coil's positive terminal, is more than 14.2 volts at 3,500+ RPM, the voltage regulator likely needs replacing. Too much voltage can damage the ignition module and other electronic components.
We completely disassemble each distributor; everything is checked, adjusted, lubricated, etc. We then set and test the advance curve on a distributor testing machine.
The Hot-Spark 009/3BOS4U1 distributor fits the following Volkswagen models (12 volt only):
Type I - Beetle, Bug 1946-1979
Karmann Ghia, 1956-1974
Thing, Type 181, 1973-1975
Type II: 1950-1979 Bus, Transporter, Station Wagon, Kombi, Westfalia Camper (not '79 California model)
Type III - 1962-1973
Type IV (412) 1974
Vanagon 1980-83, 2.0 liter (except California model)
Most 4-cylinder, air-cooled Porsche
Models with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection: 1975-79 Bus, 1980-83 Vanagon (not '79-83 California models)
Uses these standard Bosch replacement parts:
Timing the 009 Distributor: The 009 distributor should be timed with a stroboscopic timing light, with the engine running at 3,800+ RPM. Most experts recommend that the 009 advance be set no further advanced than 28-32° BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) at 3,800+ RPM (full advance).
This distributor requires a 12-volt, negative ground electrical system.

High secondary resistance for more voltage at the plugs Ideal for Use with Hot-Spark Electronic Ignition Conversion Kits with red ignition module |
Heavy-duty, high-energy coil with extra turns of copper wire in the
secondary windings for as much as 50,000 volts to the spark plugs - more turns
of copper wire than other standard-sized canister coils - twice as much as many
other coils.
Application:
Designed specifically to produce maximum spark
when used
with Hot-Spark red electronic ignition conversion kits
(red ignition module).
Also for points-based ignition systems
Epoxy-filled
canister (not oil-filled) to withstand high-vibration
environments
Rugged, mirror-polished stainless steel case -
won't chip or peel like chrome-plated aluminum coil canisters.
Standard 56mm (2.2 in.) coil
diameter - fits stock coil clamps.
3-way brass connectors on each
terminal
